Success in 12 Months: Rules of Winning

winning-david viscottWelcome to the final week of Month 10 in our “Success in 12 Months” blog series. This entire month, the work we’ve been doing has been on acknowledging the wins in your life overall–the big and the small wins.

This week, I’ll share some “winning rules” from the book named “Winning” by psychiatrist, Dr. David Viscott. I encourage you to add this book to your “books to read” list.

The first six lessons of winning are equally powerful, but I want to peak your curiosity and touch on the last half of the rule set.

Rule number 7: Successful people seem to have more time and energy to do what they want.

Why is that? It’s because when you do what you want, your activities become self-actualizing. Your work fulfills you because it is an extension of who you are and what you believe.

Are you doing mostly what you do best?

Rule number 8: Most problems are most easily resolved when they first come up.

Solve problems when they first arise and when they will cost you the least.

Rule number 9: Don’t ignore mistakes – recognize a problem, take time to consider all actions that are open to you, and then correct it.

You must recognize when you’re in danger. Many people don’t do that until it’s too late.

Rule number 10: Pick what’s important – what this means is that you must set priorities.

In medicine, you’re taught first to make sure that victim can breathe and second, that his heart is functioning. Then you take care of everything else. The same is true for your business and your life.

Rule number 11: Monitor your progress – if you follow your progress closely, you’ll be much more aware of impending failures and success. You know the score even before the game is finished.

Rule number 12: Use the secret of life – the secret of life is that there is no secret of life – it’s all hard work!

But it doesn’t seem like hard work when you love what you’re doing.  And success is not as easy as you hoped or as hard as you feared.

Don’t forget this week’s assignment!

Your Weekly Action Step

In the first week of this month, I asked you to record all your big and small wins.

For week 2, I asked to you to list the 10 greatest wins/successes in your life and write in detail about what made them great.

And last week, I wanted you to write in detail about what you learned from each of those successes. That exercise was to help you realize why it is important to “keep score.”

For this last week, I want you to track and analyze the wins you’ve had in the first nine months of this course.

Next week, we’ll begin a new month with a new topic.

As I always say, share your thoughts and your progress, leave a comment below or e-mail me and let me know what’s been happening for you. I’m investing in you and want to support you in your success!

Your partner in both the big and small wins,
