Dream Decoding: Going into the Deep
Hello and welcome to the latest entry of Dream Decoding, my column dedicated to decoding your dreams!
My latest weekly Tarot reading featured The High Priestess card as this week’s theme, and as I elaborated on it, I mentioned paying attention to dreams this week. Reflecting on this after the post was online, I felt prompted to present a dream from the Dream Decoding mailbag this week.
The dream selected was inspired by another card in the same reading: the 2 of Cups, which is a card about relationships that are in the “we’re getting to know each other better” stage–and fits in perfectly with the dream’s central message.
And, much like the dreamer who shared her baby crib shop dream, this dreamer informed me that this has been a recurring dream for a number of years.
Here’s the dream…
The Dream: Going into the Deep
I am outside, standing in front of my house. There is a large body of water in front of my house. There are other people with me. I am taking them over to the water. I then take them deeper into the water, down to the bottom.
Decoding Going into the Deep
As I said in my decoding of the baby crib shop dream, a recurring dream can signify one of two things:
- The message of the dream is not understood by the dreamer, which is why it repeats–it is hoping that its continual experience will lead to insight eventually; or
- The dreamer knows what the dream is about—but is not taking the steps to practically apply the message to her life.
In this particular dream, the dreamer is being asked to examine her public image (symbolized by her being outside, in front of her house with other people).
Water is a symbol of the emotions, so the dream is about her emotional relationships with others. The dream is telling her that she has a tendency to see other people in her life as being superficial and shallow, with regard to emotional displays. She wants people to “go deeper” with their feelings (taking them deeper into the water).
What the dreamer may not realize, however, is that the dream is saying this about her. The First Principle of Dream Decoding is that everything in the dream is an aspect of the dreamer–so she is leading herself (the other people in the dream) into the water, and wanting herself (again, the other people) to have more emotional depth.
What we see in other people is really an aspect of ourselves; how else would we know what that aspect is, if we didn’t experience it first?
The dream is telling her that she keeps things close to the surface. When people ask her how things are, my guess is that things are always “fine,” and she puts on a happy face. The dream tells me she keeps her deeper feelings to herself.
The dream is telling her that what she wants others to do, she must do herself. If she wants people to share deep emotional things with her, she must be willing to do so as well.
The Dreamer Comments on the Decoding of Her Dream
Before posting a decoded dream, I always contact the dreamer and inform him or her that the dream will appear in the column along with its meaning, and ask if there are any thoughts or comments he or she would like to include.
In this case, the dreamer shared this comment with me: “I do have a tendency to be like that with others. So I need to practice what I preach, huh?”
Her comment says it all.
In Closing…
I would like to thank this dreamer for her submission and response. This is why I do–and enjoy–this work so much.
If you have a dream you’d like to submit to Dream Decoding, please e-mail your submissions to james@jameshimm with Dream Decoding and the title of the dream in the subject line.
Sweet dreams!
